Quatrième adaptation du roman de Knut Hamsun. Le lieutenant Glahn, chasseur, vit seul avec son chien près d’un hameau de pêcheurs dans le Nord de la Norvège. Il tombe amoureux d’Edvarda, fille d’un commerçant. Le lieutenant croit qu’il peut accéder à l’amour idéal. Edvarda quant à elle cherche une vie plus trépidante. Leur amour voué à l’échec depuis le début se transforme en une sorte de guerre amoureuse. A la longue, Edvarda se marie à un autre et Glahn part pour l’Orient. Né en 1927, Henning Carlsen est très certainement le réalisateur danois vivant le plus connu à l’étranger. Il débute avec des films documentaires et aborde le long-métrage en 1962 avec Dilemne. Son grand succès reste La Faim, adapté du roman de Knut Hamsun, avec un prix d’interprétation masculine à Cannes en 1966 pour l’acteur Per Oscarsson. Une rétropective lui a été consacrée au Festival du Cinéma Nordique en 1992. This is the fourth adaptation of Knut Hamsun’s novel. Set in 1859, it tells the story of Lieutenant Glahn, a hunter who lives alone with his dog near a fishing settlement in the North of Norway. He falls in love with Edvarda, daughter of a local merchant’s. He believes he can have something that doesn’t exist - the ideal romance - whilst she is trying to escape from a restricted, unfulfilled life. Their love affair is a sort of unconsummated sexual warfare which is doomed from the start. Eventually, Edvarda marries another and the Lieutenant goes abroad to the East. Henning Carlsen was born in 1927 and is undoubtedly the contemporary Danish film-maker who is best-know outside his country. He started out in documentaries, turning to full-length feature film in 1962 with Dilemma. His biggest success remains Hunger, based on the novel by Knut Hamsun. which earned Per Oscarsson the Best Actor award at Cannes in 1966. In 1992, the Nordic Film Festival held a retrospective of his films.
