Mertsi est un idéaliste. Au point de se porter volontaire pour partir à la guerre. Il en revient handicapé et sa vie va être bouleversée. Il part travailler dans la forêt où il mène une vie rude avec une équipe de bûcherons. Un homme, Kuosmanen, lui parle de son chien et de la nécessité de lui couper les griffes car il vieillit. Ce qui devait n’être qu’une blague innocente devient une obsession pour Mertsi. Par amitié pour Kuosmanen, il s’enfuit pour aller soigner le chien.
Mertsi is an idealist, who even went to war as a volunteer. He returns crippled and his life is to change completely. He has a hard time working in the forest with a team of lumberjacks. A man, Kuosmanen, tell him about his dog and about the necessity to clip its nails because it’s getting old. What was just a joke becomes an obsession for Mertsi. Out of friendship for Kuosmanen, he runs away to look after the dog.
