Le dernier mariage présente d’une manière épique les événements d’une journée du mois d’août dans le village isolé de Jerusalem, en Finlande. Nous sommes au début des années 70, les jeunes ont quitté le village pour chercher du travail à la ville ou en Suède, riche pays voisin. Le film fait le récit du dernier mariage dans le village. Le héros, Pekka, est venu de Suède avec sa famille assister à la fête. Son rêve secret est de revenir vivre au village et de retrouver son amour de jeunesse. En parallèle, nous suivons l’histoire d’Urho, dernier célibataire du village. Markku Pölönen est né en 1957, en Finlande. Il a réalisé de nombreux courts-métrages, documentaires et fictions qui ont été souvent primés. En 1993, il réalise son premier long métrage Le Pays du bonheur, primé au Festival de Tempere et en sélection officielle au Festival du Cinéma Nordique en 1994. Le dernier mariage est son second long-métrage.
The last wedding is an epic portrayal of an August day in the small, remote Finnish village of Jerusalem. It is the early 70s and the younger generations have left the village in search of work in the towns or in affluent Sweden. The film tells the story of the last wedding in the village. Pekka, the hero, has travelled from Sweden with his family to attend the wedding. His secret dream is to move back to his native village and meet up with the love of his youth. Alongside this triangular drama the film follows the comic story of Urho, the village’s last bachelor. Markku Pölönen was born in Finland in 1957. He has directed many short films both documentaries and features, for which he has received several prizes. In 1993, he directed “The land of happiness”, his first full length feature film, which won a prize at Tempere Festival and was selected for the competition at Rouen in 1994. “The last Wedding” is his second full length feature film.
